Cafe Talk #1: Movie Theater Madness!?

Welcome to the first Cafe Talk, a new segment to my Anime Cafe where I pretty much chat about anything that I want to – hopefully interesting and engaging conversation, though! Unlike my reviews, I literally have no structure for this bit, so here we go! 😀

Every summer, my siblings and I like to get together and do lots of fun, youthful activities, whether it’s playing cards, games, drawing, etc. Two years ago, our little games were starting to get old, and it seemed like there was absolutely nothing else to do but browse the web – a rising pastime. Now, a year prior to this, I stumbled upon anime, and was slowly yet secretly watching some in my free time – my greatest private haven!

Without knowing how the others would react, I bravely proposed that “I have a couple of shows I think you guys would like, are you interested?” We’re all teens that had lived up Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Sailor Moon, so I thought, “What the hell, ya know?” What’s the worst that could happen?

I printed up a schedule, lined up the shows, started my first anime collection, printed posters of each show, “advertised,” and finally, the day came – the first showing of the 2013 Summer Movie Theater. How would they react? Was my secret hobby too much/not worthy of them? *Gulp, sweat beads*

They loved all of it. Every single show.

Since then, I have been showing them more and more anime through my seasonal theaters, summer being a slew of shows with fall and winter receiving one overly-hyped title each. As silly as it sounds, it was successful, ridiculously fun, and most of all, I stepped out of the looming shadow of my love for anime – I was accepted by others, sure, siblings, but for nobody knowing to now my whole family – whew!

Now marks the third summer movie theater, and though budget problems arise, I’ve managed to pull together a pretty solid set:

Act One – Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!, Yamada’s First Time, Log Horizon, and The Devil is a Part-Timer!

Act Two – Psycho-Pass, Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11 & 2.22, A Certain Magical Index II (with Endymion movie), and Puella Magi Madoka Magica (with Rebellion movie)

The Raildex universe is always featured towards the finale of our theaters, as it just feels like a great way to end the summer. But otherwise, what do you think? Is that a good lineup or what!?

Did you ever bond with your siblings like this? Yeah, we’re dorks with our business-like format and all, but hey, we have a great time! How did you “come out” as an anime fan?   1. [Laughs] I think it all starts like that for most anime enthusiasts. The rising Internet pastime. Then it becomes stumbling upon anime. I think you have a good lineup. From your first act which have seen and thought was ‘good’ was The Devil is a Part-Timer! and from Act 2, Psycho-Pass. That one is utterly special! Pretty sure you will enjoy since you really love Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    No. For me anime has never come with a big fanfare. Sure, my family is aware of my interest but they are not all that interested in anime. The exception is my younger brother but he only has a mild interest. He is what people would call a “casual anime fan”.

      • It is a bit jarring in terms of gore at times, but they sat through Guilty Crown, Fate/Zero, Chaos;Head and Attack on Titan without much flinching, so I’m willing to take the risk. (Yay, you remembered my review!)

    • Psycho-Pass is something special for sure, and yeah, I don’t know if they’ll like Eva, but I know I didn’t want them sitting through the original series – they’d probably fall asleep! And the “casual anime fan” – I like that title haha! My parents, though they probably don’t care for anime series, they really enjoyed films like Ghost in the Shell and anything Miyazaki.

      • That is great that they are pretty mature to watch the more graphic stuff. 🙂 Yeah. That does happen. Many love Hayao Miyazaki anime films, that’s for sure. I am glad. Very happy when people, at least, enjoy those. Particularly when it comes to Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

  2. Man you’re lucky! You managed to influence your siblings to like anime! I am always trying to do that but I keep failing 😦

    Cafe Talk is a good idea!! 😀 Its good to read posts about other random things about your/people’s life 🙂

    • Thanks, I think so too! And it is a bit tricky. Some days I feel like I’m just shoehorning them to watching shows, whether they want to or not. Here’s the key part: evaluate each of your siblings character, then find a show especially for them, whether you like it or not, as they might fall in love with it. It’s hard sometimes, and it requires a lot of upkeep with interesting shows, but the result is worth it – you have a small community at your own house to mingle with about an interesting hobby!

      • Haha that’s good advice ^^ thing is, they have to be as open minded and receptive to new ideas and forms of entertainment as well – its a little hard here, but I see what you mean!

  3. Looks like you have an excellent lineup of stuff to watch this year… except for Rebellion. Sadly I don’t share my anime love with my sis. She has very different tastes to myself.

  4. Anime (and TV in general) was a lot of my childhood, as was watching them with my brother and sister. As the youngest kid in my family I often had to watch what they did. Thankfully we all had similar tastes when we were younger. I watched Toonami and Adult Swim constantly throughout my childhood but it wasn’t until fifth grade when I really got into anime.
    It happened when I met my best friend. We shared a love of Inuyasha and it exploded from there. My father was never really a fan but my mother has always supported my interests. The rest of my family doesn’t really get it either. Still thanks to our childhood both my brother and sister have always been fine with it. Me and my brother even watched some series together before he moved out. Watching TV with siblings are great memories for me so I think what you’re doing with your siblings is great.
